Beware of 2018 W-2 Email Phishing Scams Warns the IRS

Attention Employers: Back in February, the IRS warned of a W-2 phishing scam that is a continuation of a scam which hurt multitudes of taxpayers last year. The scam’s consequences and reach have drastically intensified and expanded. Here’s what you need to know to protect your business and employees:

  • Employers should review their policies for sending sensitive data such as W-2’s or making wire transfers based solely on an email request.
  • Educate employees about this scam, particularly those with access to sensitive employee information.
  • Have your IT department flag email communications where the “reply” email address is different from the “from” email address shown.

If your business is victimized by these attacks, email the IRS at dataloss@irs.gov and be sure to include W-2 Scam in the subject line.  If your businesses receives a suspect email you can forward it to phishing@irs.gov, again with W-2 scam in the subject line.
